  • The iOS app never explains anything

    By phasbot
I completed the French tree at 71% fluency, which seems to be the around the highest it can go for French. However, at the rate I keep getting the grammar exercises wrong, I feel like my real fluency is more like 25%. The iOS app is pretty basic. That is, you're left to guess why words go in certain places. I've only seemed to learn by memorization, as the app offers no explanation for any of the grammar rules. It's a glorified flash card app where you just memorize the answers and are left to figure the rules out on your own. I also felt like the app should have gotten progressively harder as you went down the tree. Instead, most exercises had this format: a phrase at the top, and a word bank at the bottom to make the translation. After a while, you can easily infer the English translation from the words available. To be fair, there *are* more detailed explanations on the duolingo web app, where I had assumed it was an exact replica of the native app. I wasn't aware the web version had more explanations until I was halfway through my tree. But, none of that excuses the iOS app's flaws.
  • Lately, Annoyingly Glitchy

    By Artemaeus
I’m currently traveling abroad and using the app to brush up, but it’s ridiculously glitchy and slow. It continuously freezes and key taps lag making it utterly useless. I though Duolingo was about making learning a new language simple and fun? These added frustrations serve counter to that theme. It needs to be fixed and improve the quality control before rolling out changes.

  • The Chinese course is bad

    By _BrightFuture_
我今天要出去 = 今天我要出去; In Duolingo, it’s not.
  • You can't practice languages with this app.

    By SwankyLynx
There is a lot of mistakes and misspelling on English to Russian pair. So I believe in other languages too. If you already know language enough to understand, then this app is waste of time for you. Maybe if you don't know the language at all you can learn something from this app, but if you "know" lang you can't practice here due to lots of mistakes. Also, the tasks repeating from day to day, it's boring. The "top-chart" system aka login every day and "practice" to get your points to challenge your friends is unnecessary here, though. All of this makes this app a game and not a learning tool.
  • Problems with update

    By Hdope
I've been using this app for two years now. I love learning bits of new languages with it. I'm not a serious studier, but recently I've felt a push to work towards becoming fluent in Spanish. I find the new graphics very distracting. Who are this cartoon characters staring at me? I get punished for not capitalizing a letter by mistake or forgetting a comma. So, even though my answer is correct, I'm punished for menial things that easily happen when practicing on an iPhone. Obviously, this app doesn't offer autocorrect (and that's a good thing) but I do think they should be a bit more lenient. Also, the part where you tap the words to form a sentence for translation, the audio seems to be lagging there now. So, I'm not hearing each word as I form the sentence. Mostly frustrated for being punished for not using a comma. I'm not using this app to work on my grammar skills. I can get another app for that.
  • It’s great when supplementing it with other means of learning like Babbel and other resources.

By some guy you should listen too
  • Error message

I keep getting the error message even when my answer is correct, which prevents me from progressing and keeping my streak...VERY frustrating!
